On May 21, 2014, Shelters to Shutters joined Middleburg Management team leaders from around the country for a property management leadership conference. Shelters to Shutters spent the afternoon educating Middleburg Management leadership about homelessness in their communities and more specifically, about the Shelters to Shutters model and how it could be utilized to identify quality entry-level employees within their company. Martha Newton, Executive Director of Shelters to Shutters, explained how Shelters to Shutters partners with local organizations that serve homeless individuals, veterans, and domestic violence survivors to identify successful candidates for the Shelters to Shutters Program. By engaging property management professionals like Middleburg Management, Shelters to Shutters is able to identify housing, job opportunities and mentoring for individuals who are looking for a “hand up” not a “hand out” on their path from homelessness to economic independence. As a company, Middleburg Management committed to join the effort by serving as Shelters to Shutters mentors, interviewing Shelters to Shutters job candidates, and matching ready-to-work homeless individuals with opportunity.
