Murad arrived in the U.S. from Sudan at age 15 knowing no English. He is now 22 years old and can speak five languages, including English. He has worked hard and put himself through school. At the end of January 2022, Murad completed a nine-month course for building maintenance at Centers for Employment Training, a Shelters to Shutters nonprofit partner in the Washington, DC area. He had ties in Texas and wanted to return but was struggling to find stable work and housing he could afford.
Through Shelters to Shutters Houston, Murad was provided an opportunity as a full-time Maintenance Tech with IMT Residential. He started his new job in February 2022, and on the same day, CORT delivered furniture to turn his new apartment into a home where he could thrive. When asked how he felt that day, Murad said, “This is a new beginning as I look to start my future.”
Murad is just one of many success stories that Shelters to Shutters, in collaboration with our partners, has the privilege to be a part of every month.
Congratulations, Murad!
