Shelters to Shutters, a non-profit organization that works with apartment industry and real estate professionals to offer opportunity and economic independence to individuals experiencing homelessness, is proud to announce Waterton as a property management program partner.  Waterton is a premier real estate investor and property management company with $4.0 billion in assets including 20,000 multifamily housing units and 13 hotels. Headquartered in Chicago, IL with regional offices throughout the United States, Waterton Residential is committed to being a positive force in the communities in which its employees work and live.

“Shelters to Shutters is a great example of private sector collaboration making a difference for the most vulnerable in our community,” said Peter Vilim, Co-Founder and Co-Chairman. “Waterton is proud to be partnering with this unique organization.  We look forward to seeing more real estate and property management companies come alongside this important cause to move the needle on the issue of homelessness together.”

It is estimated that over the course of a year, 3.5 million people experience homelessness, 40 percent of whom are children.  Most of these individuals and families experience a life-altering event such as a job loss, domestic abuse, or other situations and find themselves where they never thought they would be—without a home.  Unlike most perceptions, less than 30% of homeless have drug or alcohol dependency issues, or are mentally ill.  Most individuals facing homelessness want to work and return to a life of self-sufficiency.

Founded by Christopher C. Finlay, Founder and Managing Partner, Middleburg Real Estate Partners, Shelters to Shutters pairs leading property management professionals with individuals facing homelessness who are ready-to-work. The result is an innovative program that provides mentorship for careers in property management, along with full time employment and housing opportunities.

“We are thrilled to have such a strong partner like Waterton  come on board with the program,” Mr. Finlay said, “Waterton is already a company that exemplifies giving back. Now, through Shelters to Shutters, they will be able to directly assist individuals and families in need of a “hand up” through full time employment and stable housing opportunities within their company. We’re excited to see the growing impact this new partnership will create.”
