Vienna, VA – June 22, 2022 — Shelters to Shutters (S2S) is pleased to name Susan Burke, President of the Charleston Apartment Association and Regional Manager for Middleburg Communities, as Chair of the Charleston City Advisory Board. Susan is the first member named to the City Advisory Board and will work closely with S2S Charleston Executive Director, Daniel Stern, to build support for the S2S mission of transitioning individuals at risk and facing homelessness to economic self-sufficiency.
Susan will lead the advisory board’s efforts to establish S2S as the go to referral source for job candidates for the real estate community as well as ensure the financial resources and community support for the organization are set up for long term success.
“Susan brings a passion and energy for helping others that is contagious. Her knowledge and experience with the multifamily housing industry and the Charleston community makes her the ideal person to lead the charge for us as we build a board and program here locally,” said Daniel Stern, Executive Director of Shelters to Shutters Charleston.
S2S partners with over 30 apartment management companies to place people experiencing homelessness in onsite, entry-level jobs, and provide them with housing at the same communities where they work. S2S provides each participant with career training, mentoring and access to support services to ensure a successful long-term transition. S2S works with multiple at risk and homeless-focused referring partners to identify suitable job applicants. The program changes the lives of individuals and families while providing quality, motivated employees for a rapidly growing industry in need of talent.
Susan Burke is currently the President of the Charleston Apartment Association (CAA) and has served on its Board of Directors for 8 years. Susan is an approved instructor with the South Carolina LLR and currently teaches the SC Property Management class. As an industry leader, Susan is licensed as a South Carolina Real Estate Broker and currently is a Regional Property Manager with Middleburg Communities. As Regional Manager, Susan oversees communities in South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia and Alabama.
